strategic home organizing: The whole big picture

What do you think of when you hear the term "home organizing"? Cute boxes for all the different types of toys? Your socks sorted in rainbow order in your drawer?

Yes. Those are all nice things. However. Strategic home organizing is different. It’s not:

  • Having someone come to your home to make choices about your stuff and implementing a system that is the product of their brain, not yours
  • Creating unnecessarily detailed ways of arranging your things
  • Buying pretty boxes and/or shelves and cramming everything into them
  • Reverse-engineering that thing you saw on Pinterest
  • Making everyone change their habits

Why? Because, bottom line, forcing your family to use someone else's organizing solution will not likely yield sustainable results! (And PS, I recommend a bit of Kon Mari action first!)

Strategic home organizing IS about:

  • Clarifying your priorities of how you want to inhabit a space—Which spaces are kids spaces? Which are adult spaces? How do these spaces interact?
  • Observing what informal processes are already in place and formalizing them—Kids already dumping their backpacks by the door? Put some hooks there!
  • Taking into account your work style—Does seeing clutter stress you out or is it item-out-of-sight-item-out-of-mind?
  • Noticing your clutter pitfalls and tweaking environmental enablers—Flat surfaces magnetically attract piles? Don’t let yourself have a lot of them!
  • Creating living environments that harmonize your needs with the way your space was built—Live in a 1940s home with no entryway but need a place nearby to hang coats so water doesn’t get tracked everywhere?

With strategic home organizing, I help you set up the framework and you run with it. It is a participatory, interactive, big-picture process customized to you and your family.

Why Strategic?

Having a clear system that everyone uses because it’s not complicated or inconvenient saves you time, energy, and money, as well as minimizes stress. When you have a place to put a thing and that place makes sense to you, you will actually put it there. When you (and everyone you live with) know where to put something, you know where to find it. If you always know where to find it, you won’t waste time and energy looking for it. You won’t waste money buying another one because you can’t find the first one. You won’t yell at your spouse or kids because it’s not there.

Just think! You could be having a family sing-along or binge-watching your favorite show, if only you could find your #$%& keys!

Are you ready to have a home that works for you?
